A sunglasses lens darkness category describes how much visible light passes through the lens. It is not the same as polarization, and a dark tint does not by itself confirm UV protection. This guide explains the commonly used Categories 0–4 so you can compare lens information before choosing a frame.
Sunglasses darkness levels at a glance
- Category 0: very light or nearly clear lenses, generally used for fashion or low-light conditions.
- Category 1: a light tint for weak to moderate brightness.
- Category 2: a medium tint for moderate sunlight.

Darkness, UV protection and polarization are different
Lens darkness concerns visible light. UV protection concerns ultraviolet radiation. Polarization is designed to reduce strong horizontal reflections from roads, water, sand and other bright surfaces. A product can combine these features, but one does not automatically prove the others.

How to choose a lens darkness level
